Ikkado Ito's popular manga The Long Summer of August 31 is officially getting both a TV anime and a live-action TV series. The double adaptation was announced on August 31, 2026, giving fans of the ongoing time-loop romantic comedy plenty to look forward to.
The TV anime will be produced by SHAFT, the studio known for works such as Puella Magi Madoka Magica and the Monogatari series. An ultra-teaser visual has also been released alongside the announcement.
The Long Summer of August 31 Gets Two Adaptations
The Long Summer of August 31 (Hachigatsu Sanjuuichi no Long Summer) is receiving both animated and live-action adaptations.
While details about the premiere dates, cast, staff, and broadcasters have not yet been revealed, the announcement confirms that the manga will be brought to screens in two different formats.
The anime's production by SHAFT is particularly exciting, considering the studio's distinctive visual style and experience with unusual storytelling and supernatural themes.
What Is The Long Summer of August 31 About?
The story follows two high school students, Takaya Suzuki and Kana Takagi, who find themselves trapped in an endless loop of August 31.
Every time the day comes to an end, the two return to the same date. Even more surprisingly, they appear to be the only people who can retain their memories from one loop to the next.
As Suzuki and Takagi work together to figure out why the time loop is happening, Suzuki suspects that the answer may be connected to an unfinished goal from his summer vacation. What follows is a strange combination of romance, comedy, and time-loop mystery.
SHAFT to Produce the Anime
One of the biggest announcements is that SHAFT will handle animation production for the TV anime.
The studio has built a reputation for visually distinctive productions, including the Monogatari franchise and Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Its involvement gives fans a reason to be particularly curious about how the repeating August 31 setting and the manga's unique atmosphere will be translated into animation.
No director, series composer, character designer, or voice cast has been announced yet.
Live-Action TV Series Also Confirmed
Alongside the anime, The Long Summer of August 31 will also receive a live-action TV drama adaptation.
The live-action series could offer a very different interpretation of the relationship between Suzuki and Takagi and the strange circumstances surrounding their repeated summer day.
Production details, including the actors who will play the two main characters, have yet to be announced.
Manga Continues Its Run
Ito began The Long Summer of August 31 in Kodansha's Morning magazine in March 2023. The series remains ongoing, and 13 volumes had been released as of August 2026.
To celebrate the adaptations, Comic DAYS is also offering a limited-time promotion, including a special episode available on August 31 and four volumes available to read for free for one week.
More Details Are Coming
For now, fans will have to wait for additional information about both adaptations. Release dates, cast members, staff, and further promotional material are expected to be revealed at a later date.
With SHAFT producing the anime and a live-action series also in development, The Long Summer of August 31 is shaping up to be one of the more interesting manga adaptations to watch.
